Each class formulates a question on their Learning Circle theme according to criteria for quality research sponsored question.

Question 1: 

Cause and Effect: How do wars start? 

  Subquestions: Why did the nazis and Japan start WWII? 

                                   Why and how did the war in Afghanistan start?

How did other nations become involved in these wars?

 

 

Question 2: 

Cause and Effect: What are the effects that allied forces have on the culture of the country/countries where the war takes place?

              Subquestions: What effects did the allied forces have on European culture? 

                                    What effects do the allied troops have on Afghan culture? 

                                    Which effects will remain? Which will disappear with time?

Question: 

Main Question               Why did Canadian (Allied) soldiers fight in WWII ?

Sub questions               Why do you think Canadian soldiers fought in WWII ?

                                   What reasons are given in school- and history books

                                   What reasons were / are given by soldiers themselves ? (letters, diaries, stories)

Question:

1. What was/were/the reasons(s) for governments to make the decison to help other countries?

 

a.What reason(s) did soldiers during WW II have to fight against an enemy they had never seen before, in a country few thousand miles away from their own?

b. Could the reason, previously mentioned, be the same for soldiers nowadays?

c. What might have happened to the world if Nazi-Germany hadn't been defeated?

d. Do you think the Canadian losses were "worth"the liberation of the Netherlands and other European countries?

e. How did soldiers feel when they actually had to go into the combat? 

f. Do you think that people after the war could get back to back to normal life=

g. What did it mean to the families of soldiers that they went to war?

Question:

At the going down of the sun and in the morning

We will remember them.

Main question: How is Remembrance Day celebrated in your local community?

Subquestions: 

(1) Why do we remember?

(2) Whom do we remember?

(3) What should we remember?

(6) What is the relevance of Remembrance Day now?

(7) Is there continued public support for Remembrance Day?

 

 


LC26: Oromocto High School, Oromocto, New Brunswick - Amanda Pottle

Question: 

* As we experience more global conflicts, why is it important to continue to remember the events and issues of WWII?

     - Many have argued that our youth are becoming more and more desensitized to the violence and struggles experienced my those involved in conflicts.  Why do many young people feel that the actions of veterans "do not apply" to them?

     - How will we be sure to remember those who are serving in current conflicts such as that of Afghanistan in a respectful and reverent manner? 

 

 

 

 


LC27: Simonds High School, Saint John, New Brunswick - Erika Brown & Craig James

 

"Death is the end of a life, not a relationship" - Morrie Schwartz. With so many of our veterans passing our students are thinking about the relationship between our countries.

 

Question: As you go through your school careers, how and when do you learn about the history of World War II? For instance, is it only in certain grades? Are there specific themes or points of focus? Does the focus shift over time (from year to year)? Perhaps more importantly, what do you remember learning and what lasting impact did it have on you?

 

Sub Questions: (For the sub questions, Netherlands students please answer about Canada, Canadian students please answer about the Netherlands.)

  1. What is taught about Canada/Netherlands, specifically during WWII and the post-war period?
  2. What do you learn about Canada/Netherlands more generally, about who we are as a people?
  3. Is your view of Canada/Netherlands based mostly on this past event? What do they include of the years and events since the war?
  4. How do you see the current relationship between our two peoples/countries?
  5. In 2045, the 100th anniversary of the end of the War, how do you think people will reflect on these events?

 


LC28: Saint John High School, Saint John, New Brunswick - Stacey Wood

Question:

Main question: What do you think would have happened if the Liberation had not occurred?

Sub-questions:

  • Is it possible the a dictator similar to Hitler could gain power today? 
  • Is it already happening?
  • If so, what can we do to prevent?

What was daily life like for people, especially teens, in your community during the war?

(Netherlands)

1. What types of restrictions were imposed, if any, on Dutch teens during the occupation? (public places, swimming pools, food, etc)

2. How were the schools in your area affected?

3. Were there any resistance movements in your community? If so, what?

4. In what ways did your communities change after the liberation? How might teens have helped?

(Canada)

1.  How were your communities different during the war with so many of the young men away in Europe?

2.  In what ways did your communities change once the war was over?

3. In what ways have your communities honoured those that fought and died?

 


LC210: Tecumseth Beeton Public School, Beeton, Ontario - Andrew Townsend

What is the current relationship between the Netherlands and its occupants during the war?

1) How are the effects of German occupation felt in the Netherlands today?

2) What was the common Dutch persons experience during the war?

3) Why do you think Canadian soldiers fought in the war?

4) What effects did the war have on the Dutch military, then and now?

5)What is the current relationship between the Netherlands and its occupants during the war? "

 

Bob: > maybe the Canadian classes can focus on Q3... as Q1,2,4 are hard to answer for Canadian classes.
