During workshops in Holland and Canada we discussed the opportunities and limitations of the theme "Echoes from the past; Poems for the future".

In key words the outcome:

  • In the middle of it all are the two topics liberation and freedom
  • The time frame would be 1939 – 2010
    • Wars/conflicts and liberations during these 66 years can be addressed, world wide
      • So this would exclude “medieval wars”
      • And include wars/conflicts in Afghanistan, Balkan war, Vietnam…. Etc.
  • Sources to use can be books, movies, web, (grand) parents stories, excursions, interviews,  etc.
    • Always ask your students to mention the source where information was found
  • Questions should not be on facts.. like: "how much/many or in which year"?
  • Questions that address meaningful topics open the possibility for answers based upon local situations enabling the Learning Circle to become rich and diverse; also real life experiences from (grand)parents, relatives, veterans.
    • For example: "Identify a person that was a teenagers in your area during the war, ask him/her to describe a day in their life that tells us how the war effectuated daily routines like going to school or clubs.
  • Phase 5 of the Learning Circle, where each class reflects on answers received and creates a summary is the phase in which we suggest each student to write a poem, if possible enriched with an embedded video clip. See example of Jacquelien.
